Obituary

Robert James McCallum, affectionately known to many as “Bob” or “Bobby,” a longtime resident of Blythe, California, passed away on September 6, 2026, at the age of 77.

Robert was born on May 6, 1949, in Illinois, to William and Helen McCallum. In 1952, when he was just three years old, his family moved to Blythe, California, the community that would become his home for most of his life. He attended high school in Coachella, California.

Robert met Sharon in Blythe, and the two were married in 1971. Together they built a life and a family, welcoming their son, David, in 1972 and their daughter, Chrissy, in 1978.

Robert was a hardworking man who knew the value of doing a job well. Early in his working life, he worked alongside his father, William “Mac” McCallum, at International in Blythe. He loved tractors and farm equipment. He was also part of a memorable piece of local history when Interstate 10 opened through the area, driving a tractor as part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Robert later went to work for Ramsey Truck and Trailer Repair in Blythe, where he spent 35 years as parts manager. After retiring from Ramsey, Robert quickly discovered that retirement didn't suit a man who didn't like sitting still. He went back to work, this time at Larry Green Dodge, before eventually retiring once again.

Working with his hands wasn't simply something Robert did for a living—it was part of who he was. He loved fixing and tinkering with cars and enjoyed woodworking. Whether repairing something mechanical or creating something from wood, Robert enjoyed figuring out how things worked and putting his skills to use. Robert was also a devoted New York Yankees fan and enjoyed following his team through the years.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Sharon McCallum; his children, Chrissy McCallum and David McCallum (Cruz); his grandchildren, Zachary McCallum, Hailey McCallum, Christian McCallum (Veronica), Baylee McCallum, and Skylar McCallum; his siblings, William “Billy” McCallum (Frieda), Annette McCallum, and Larry McCallum (Sally); his nephews, Joey McCallum (Mary) and Shawn McCallum; as well as his great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Robert spent nearly his entire life in the Blythe area. He worked hard, raised his family, built a lifetime of memories, and became part of the community's history. He will be deeply missed by the family who loved him and by the many people whose lives he touched during his 77 years.

A Memorial Service will be held for Bobby at Frye Chapel and Mortuary on Tuesday, September 22nd at 10 a.m.
