Douglas "Doug" Warren Lester was a true gentleman and cowboy whose strength, humor, and steady wisdom left an enduring mark on every life he touched.

Born in Ringling, Oklahoma, Doug spent his childhood working hard alongside his family throughout Texan and Oklahoman plains. Though the labor was demanding, his stories of those early years brimmed with affection for his siblings and a deep appreciation for the values of perseverance and loyalty that shaped him. Those formative days laid the foundation for the man he would become—resilient, devoted, and quietly strong.

Doug proudly served nearly two years in the United States Navy, carrying his sense of duty and discipline into every chapter of his life. After returning home, he attended Los Angeles Business College, earning a Bachelor's degree in accounting. He eventually settled in Blythe, California, where he founded the successful Lester Hay Company, building not only a thriving business but a respected name within the community.

In Blythe, Doug purchased and transformed 40 acres of land into the beautiful Lester Ranch—a place that would become the heart of his life's work and legacy. He married Lou Ann Lester, and together they raised their five children. On the ranch, Doug taught his children how to rope, race, and ride—how to become true rodeo cowboys—but more importantly, he taught them the values of grit and integrity.

Though many describe Doug as a tough cowboy, those who knew him best understood that beneath the steady exterior was a man quick with a joke and capable of making friends laugh to tears. Even after retirement, Doug could still be found tending to the ranch he loved so deeply and supporting the Blythe community.

While his heart and soul were ingrained in the soil of Lester Ranch, Doug also cherished time spent at his condo in Cayucos, California—a place he fondly described as "heaven on earth." There, as in Blythe, he formed lasting friendships and continued to make waves of positive change, touching lives with his humor, generosity, and steadfast character.

Doug is survived by his five children: Ren Nickson (Susan), Melinda Cheetham (Craig), Jon Nickson, Karey Lester, and Dean Lester; his five grandchildren, Cody Cheetham, Samantha Schmidt (Max), Cole Nickson, Emma Maag (Brandon), and Ava Lester; and one great-grandson soon to be born, a new life that carries forward his enduring legacy.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Amie and Fred, and his siblings, Gala, Mary, and Gene.

Doug Lester leaves behind a legacy rooted in hard work, love of family, devotion to community, and the unmistakable spirit of a true cowboy. Though he may have found beauty in the shores of Cayucos, his life's story will forever be written in the fields of Lester Ranch and in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Services for Doug's celebration of life are taking place at the Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, March 7th, 2026 at 10:00am.
