Cassell James Jones died at the age of 57 on August 28th, 2026, in Blythe, California. He was born on January 24, 1969, to Howard Preston Jones and Doretha Jones in Los Angeles, California. The family later moved to Pomona, California, where he attended school and graduated from Pomona High School in 1988. He also attended Mt. San Antonio College prior to starting a career in the grocery store industry for 15 years. Cassell made the decision to relocate to Blythe, California, to be closer to his mother, brother, and other family members and began working at Flying J. Not long after, he began a career with the California Department of Corrections, where he remained for 18 years until his untimely passing.
Cassell met the love of his life, Lynette Phillips, in 2014, whom he enjoyed sharing time and yearly vacations with. He also loved to fish, cook, and having family get-togethers. He loved sports and his favorite team, the Los Angeles Lakers.
Cassell is survived by his soulmate Lynette Phillips; brother Anthony Jones; sister-in-law Donna Marie; nieces Nya Marie, Lillian Ann Marie, and nephew Anthony Howard Jones Jr., brother Howard Jones Jr., sister Janice Dickerson and a host of aunts, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Howard Preston Jones, and mother Doretha; brother (cousin) Tamaynga Marks, Grandmother Lula Butler Henderson, Grandfather Theo Butler Sr., Aunt Geraldine Butler, Uncles: Theo Jr., Raymond and Carl Butler.
Cassell will be dearly missed by all, and his humor and smile will never be forgotten. You are now at peace with your father, mother, and other family members. He was kind to all who knew him, and his departure from this Earth will leave a void that will be profoundly felt by all his family, friends, and community.
Services will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026 with visitation starting at 10AM and funeral service beginning at 11AM at Frye Chapel in Blythe. A gathering will follow at the VFW Post 2987 in Blythe from 12:30-3:30PM.
